Just In Time For The Holidays! Reindeer Science And A Freebie!

I wanted to get this out before you were all on Holiday Break after next week!  This Science activity is available at my TpT store!  There's also a FREEBIE!  The activity is aligned to the Common Core for Kindergarten Science!  Reindeer Science is all about looking for the sun, moon and stars at different times of the day as well as different seasons.  Your boys and girls will also love learning a little bit about shadows!

When the mouse goes to school, he wants to do Science!

Hi Everyone!
This week we were doing an author study of Laura Numeroff stories!  We read many of her great books and we did this Science experiment as an activity to go with the story, "If You Take A Mouse To School."  This is the Science experiment from the story!

As a whole group, we followed the Scientific Method, coming up with a question, constructing a hypothesis, doing the experiment and recording our observations, discussing our conclusions and then answering our original question.  It was great the see the kiddies so excited and engaged! 

 We put the ingredients into this glass bowl so that everyone could see it!   We mixed it all up and added food coloring to make it purple. 

 Everyone got a chance to add some of the purple puffy paint to the recording sheet!  Each person got to scoop out some of the puffy paint and apply it to the recording sheet.  We talked about our 5 Senses and how we used them to investigate the puffy paint.

The Hens Are Growing! Chicken Little Isn't So Little Anymore!

Those chicks are getting bigger every single day! It's been an exciting and interesting Science activity in our classroom! The boys and girls are very interested in observing the behaviors of the chicks including how the chicks feel about their new roost! It is really hilarious to watch the chick explore the cardboard "coop" we made and finally take a step inside! One of the chicks finished out the day by sitting on top of the box, just contently watching us!

The best part is that the kiddies are learning about animals and animal habitats! They are asking so many great questions that I know they are thinking and learning about animals. Life Science is great!

Wait until you see what else we have coming to Room A-1!

It's A Hen Party! Chicks Are Peeping in A-1!

Back from Spring Break and chicks have come to our room!  We are studying oviparous animals and these chicks have stolen our hearts!  We have eggs in the incubator and chicks in the house!  They are so stinkin' adorable it's hard not to hold them all day and carry them around!  I do have to admit that the one named, Chicken Little-Cutie Pie is absolutely my favorite!  She is so sweet and she enjoys being held, so, I carry her around during the day, let her sit on my desk when I'm working and let her sit in my lap while I do my lesson planning!  The kiddies love her as much as I do!  They came up with names and then we voted on the 4 most popular!  "Chicken Little" and "Cutie Pie" were only separated by 1 vote, so the kiddies decided to let "Cutie Pie" be her last name. Okay with me!
When you look at the pictures you can see why she has this sweet little name!

Here's a picture of our classroom incubator!  It's a Brinsea Mini Advance Egg Incubator with an automatic egg turner.  It is an awesome incubator!  I love it!  I've been using it for 3 years now!

Now can you see why there's a Hen Party going on in Room A-1!  They are beautiful!  They are just starting to get their feathers!

A Sound Freebie On My Store Page!

We were so busy last week getting ready for Spring Break and Easter!  We did this activity with my kiddies and they loved it!  We have been working on learning about Sound to meet our Science objective. 

 

Some objects and materials can be made to vibrate to produce sound.

 

Sound is produced by touching, blowing or tapping objects. The sounds that are produced vary depending on the properties of objects. Sound is produced when object vibrate.

 

We used my violin to explore how the strings vibrate to produce sound and we felt the back of the violin while I played the strings.  We used a tuning fork to see and hear the sound vibrations.  We used a pie pan of water to watch the waves and the vibrations created when we put the tuning fork into the water!  Then we tried this same experiment with salt in a pie plate.  The boys and girls were thrilled to see the salt "jump" when we put the tuning fork to it!  We created a chart and wrote all the things we learned about Sound!  Finally, we played the, "What's In The Egg Game" to explore that different sounds are produced from different objects.

What's In That Egg? A Sound Activity

 

Here's a picture of the eggs I used for this Sound Activity!  This is the first carton with eggs (and a backup spare!) for eggs 1-6.  I have another carton with the eggs numbered 7-12.  After we do this activity as a whole group, I put Eggs 1-12 in my Centers.  I keep the backup eggs in case one gets broken.  Then it's easy to replace the eggs quickly!

A Hearty Kind of Week!

It's been "heart" to keep up this week!  We had a great Valentine's Day party with several little crafts, oodles of beautiful valentines and tons of sweet candy treats!  The A-1 parents are so generous!  They always send just what we need to have a great party!  I love that!

We had a terrific field trip to the Cincinnati Children's Museum today!  It was snowing outside but warm and wonderful inside the Museum Center!  There are lots of kid friendly science activities as well as many dramatic play areas!  The kiddies had a great, great time and learned lots of fun and fabulous science information!
